The Malaspina Castle in Varzi is one of the most fascinating historical testimonies of the Oltrepò Pavese, immersed in the evocative setting of the medieval village. With its grandeur and intricate past, the castle is a symbol of architectural beauty and millennial history. Today, it is a place of great cultural and historical interest, which continues to enchant anyone who visits it.

In the heart of the medieval village of Varzi, in the hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, the Malaspina Castle stands imposingly, an authentic testimony to centuries of history. The link between the castle and the Malaspina family, one of the most influential of the Italian Middle Ages, has ancient origins: it dates back to 1164, when Frederick Barbarossa granted the fief of Varzi to the family as a sign of gratitude for their loyalty. Since then, this imposing manor has become a symbol of the Malaspina presence in the region.

One of the most significant events in the castle‘s history dates back to 1838, when the last heiress of the Malaspina family was united in marriage to Count Carlo Odetti di Marcorengo. This union not only marked the passing of the castle to its new owners, but also ushered in a new era for the fortress, which was renovated and preserved thanks to the efforts of the Odetti-Malaspina family. The descendants of the family are still the owners of the castle, and their restoration work has restored splendour to this architectural gem.

The Malaspina Castle in Varzi is distinguished by its composite structure, the result of extensions and modifications made at different times. The oldest part dates back to the 13th century, while other sections, including a second building and the central body, were added in the 15th and 18th centuries respectively. The combination of architectural styles makes the castle a fascinating example of how medieval structures evolved over time.

The imposing defensive wall and the almost 30-metre-high tower remain among the most representative elements of the castle, testifying to its original function as a defensive bulwark. The 15th-century gateway, surmounted by the Malaspina family coat of arms with the famous ‘spino secco’, welcomes visitors on a journey through history.

Overlooking Piazza Umberto I, one of the most recent sections of the castle, built in the 18th century, represents the heart of the ancient complex, integrating medieval elements such as the 13th-century defensive wall. Here, a sundial decorates the façade, adding a further touch of charm to the structure.

The renovation commissioned by the Counts Odetti di Marcorengo particularly concerned the interior areas of the castle, transforming the spaces into versatile and refined environments. The mediaeval cellars, now known as the Galleria dei Sassi Medievali, offer visitors a unique view of the past, while the Antica Ghiaccia, once used for storing ice, has been adapted for new functional purposes.

Other recovered areas include the old stables, now known as the Ancient Manger Hall, now used for exhibitions and conferences. The barn, on the other hand, has been transformed into the sumptuous Faustino Odetti Hall, an ideal venue for receptions and cultural events. These converted spaces offer new life to the structure, allowing the castle to be not only a historical monument, but also a dynamic meeting and cultural venue.

The Malaspina Castle in Varzi is more than just a medieval fortification. It is a symbol of the history and cultural heritage of the region, which through the centuries has been able to adapt to the needs of the times without ever losing its authenticity. Thanks to the dedication of the Odetti-Malaspina family, this magnificent castle continues to be one of the most precious jewels of the Oltrepò Pavese, offering visitors a plunge into the past and a unique experience of history, architecture and timeless beauty.
