A museum capable of covering centuries of history and collecting the archaeological wonders of an area that for millennia has been inhabited by heterogeneous cultures, we are talking about the Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and the Oltrepò pavese
There is no better place to explore and learn more about the history of the Oltrepò pavese than the Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and the Oltrepò pavese, founded in 1974 by a group of local enthusiasts and the municipal administration following the discovery of two Roman tombs. Year after year, the museum continued to grow thanks to donations from private individuals and largely thanks to the results of excavations by the Lombardy Archaeological Superintendency. This led to the extension of the spaces until the restoration of Palazzo Certosa in 1999, where the museum is currently located, which was enriched with various materials from the most recent excavations in the Oltrepò area.
Today, the Mac consists of four dedicated sections:
- Geology and palaeontology;
- Prehistory and Protohistory;
- The Roman Age, the Middle Ages and the Baroque;
- Collections.
This place contains all the archaeological wonders of the Oltrepò pavese, an area that for centuries has been a place of exchanges, meetings and clashes of heterogeneous cultures. The history of centuries and centuries can be relived thanks to the collection of testimonies, artefacts, donations and finds that have been studied and put on display so as to create an exhibition itinerary capable of responding to the various curiosities that visitors may have.
Visiting this place is a must for anyone wishing to discover the Oltrepò, and is suitable for historians and those interested in the archaeological world as well as families, as there are didactic workshops inside that include simulated excavations and cave paintings, so that visitors of all ages can enjoy a visit to this museum.
