The Castle of Oliva Gessi is a jewel hidden in the hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, a place where history and landscape blend in an atmosphere of rare beauty. Located in the small municipality of Oliva Gessi, with less than 200 inhabitants, the castle dominates the landscape with its elegance and ancient charm, emerging as a testimony to the long and rich history of the region.

The first historical traces of Oliva Gessi Castle date back to the early Middle Ages. Although the precise details are shrouded in mystery, historical documents suggest the existence of a fortification as early as the 10th century. At that time, the Oltrepò Pavese was a borderland, often the scene of disputes between lordships and local powers. In this context, the castle played a strategic function, both as a defence of the territory and as a symbol of feudal power.

Ancient chronicles speak of the Belcredi family as the first lords of the castle, who used the structure as a feudal palace. Over the centuries, the defensive function of the fortification gradually gave way to residential use, reflecting changes in the political and social dynamics of the region.

The turning point in the history of Oliva Gessi Castle came with the arrival of the Isimbardi family, who acquired ownership of the village and castle. It was under their leadership that the medieval fortress was transformed into a stately home, with a series of renovations that gave the castle the elegant appearance that can still be admired today.

The Isimbardi family was one of the most influential in the Oltrepò Pavese, and the transformation of the castle reflected their status and their desire to create a residence worthy of their rank. During this period, the castle was extended and renovated, with the addition of architectural and decorative elements that made it one of the most refined noble residences in the area.

The Castle of Oliva Gessi is a fascinating example of how a medieval fortress can be transformed into a noble residence without completely losing its original character. The structure is built around a central courtyard, a typical element of noble residences of the time, which served as the hub of domestic and social life.

One of the most distinctive elements of the castle is the large terrace overlooking the surrounding hills, built on the retaining wall that surrounds the complex on three sides. This terrace is not only a masterpiece of engineering, but also offers a spectacular view of the landscape, with vineyards and hills stretching as far as the eye can see.

The eastern and northern sides of the castle retain traces of the original 10th-century structures, despite numerous subsequent interventions. These sides retain a more austere and fortified appearance, contrasting with the refinement of more recent additions.

The western side of the castle houses a small noble chapel, a real hidden treasure. The interior of the chapel is decorated with frescoes dating back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries, testifying to the skill of local artists and the refined taste of the Isimbardi family. These frescoes, with their vivid colours and religious scenes, add a further layer of beauty and spirituality to the complex.

Another highlight is the Italian-style garden, located on the castle terrace. This garden is a perfect example of Italian landscape art, with its geometric flower beds, precisely pruned hedges and decorative statues. Walking through the garden, one can enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding hills, a panorama that changes with the seasons but is always enchanting.

Today, Oliva Gessi Castle is a private residence, but its beauty and historical value continue to attract attention. Although not open to the public on a regular basis, the castle can be visited on special occasions, such as the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) Days, which offer the opportunity to explore this extraordinary place.
