The Oltrepò Pavese is an area where time seems to flow with a different rhythm, marked by the seasons and the cycles of nature. Here, agriculture is not just an economic practice, but an element of identity, a true connective tissue that unites the history, culture and daily life of those who inhabit it. For centuries, this land has been cultivated with love and dedication, making it one of the most important and distinctive agricultural territories in Italy.

Agriculture in the Oltrepò Pavese area has ancient roots, dating back to Roman times. However, it was in the Middle Ages that agriculture in the Oltrepò began to take on the forms we recognise today. Monasteries and abbeys, centres of culture and spirituality, were also the fulcrums of agricultural development: the monks, in fact, not only reclaimed vast areas, but also introduced agricultural techniques that were advanced for the time, encouraging the growth of vine and wheat cultivation.

Over the centuries, the Oltrepò Pavese area has been able to maintain and perfect these agricultural traditions, passing through periods of prosperity and crisis, but always with the awareness that the land is a precious resource to be protected and enhanced. The presence of numerous historic farmsteads, still perfectly functional today, is a living testimony to this centuries-old history.

Oltrepò Pavese is mainly known for its wine production, being one of the main wine districts in Italy. The variety of its vines, ranging from Barbera to Croatina, from Pinot Noir to Riesling, offers a range of very high quality wines, appreciated both nationally and internationally. But the agriculture of this region is not limited to viticulture.

The hilly soils, rich in clay and limestone, are also ideal for growing cereals and maize, another fundamental resource for the local economy. In addition, the Oltrepò is famous for honey production, thanks to the presence of a variegated flora that favours biodiversity and the quality of bee products.

The agricultural tradition of the Oltrepò Pavese is an invaluable heritage, but this does not mean that the region is stuck in the past. On the contrary, today‘s agriculture is at an important crossroads, where the challenge is to reconcile respect for tradition with innovation and sustainability.

Agriculture in the Oltrepò Pavese is not just an economic sector, but the beating heart of an entire community. It is a story of men and women who, generation after generation, have worked the land with passion, respect and dedication, creating an area that today is synonymous with excellence, tradition and innovation. Looking to the future, Oltrepò Pavese will continue to be one of the most important and distinctive agricultural areas in Italy, a place where history and modernity are harmoniously intertwined, and where the land will continue to be a source of wealth and identity for generations to come.
