If you are looking for a break from the hectic pace of the city and want to immerse yourself in the tranquillity and beauty of the Italian countryside, Oltrepò Pavese is a perfect destination.

This enchanting area of Lombardy, known for its hilly landscapes and food and wine traditions, is home to four villages that have been recognised as among the most beautiful in Italy. These are Golferenzo, Zavattarello, Fortunago and Varzi, each with its own history, architecture and culture to discover.

Golferenzo: A Plunge into the Medieval Past

Golferenzo is a small municipality in the Oltrepò Pavese with just 212 inhabitants, but its size should not mislead. This medieval village, with its perfectly preserved stone houses and paved alleys, is an authentic historical gem. Walking through its narrow streets, one has the impression of being catapulted back in time, surrounded by an atmosphere of peace and serenity.

Zavattarello: The Village of Cobblers and Castles

The name Zavattarello derives from the Latin ‘savattarellum’, meaning ‘place where savatte (slippers) are made’. This place-name tells of a time when the village‘s main activity was shoe-making, with numerous cobbler‘s workshops animating its streets. Today, Zavattarello still retains that craft and authentic atmosphere, but is perhaps best known for its imposing Dal Verme Castle.

The castle, which dominates the town from above, is a magnificent example of medieval architecture and offers a spectacular view of the surroundings. Inside, you can admire frescoes, furnished rooms and a museum that tells the story of the Dal Verme family, the former lords of the place. A visit to the castle is an unmissable experience for those who want to immerse themselves in local history.

Fortunago: A Journey through Time among the Ancient Walls

Fortunago is one of those villages that, despite its small size, manages to surprise anyone who visits it. Strolling through its ancient lanes is like taking a journey back in time, among stone houses, narrow alleys and small squares that seem to have come straight out of a vintage postcard. The beauty of Fortunago lies precisely in its ability to preserve its historical identity intact, offering visitors an authentic and unusual experience.

Varzi: Between History and Traditions

Varzi is perhaps the most famous village in the Oltrepò Pavese, not only for its beauty but also for its rich history and traditions. The historic centre of Varzi is a real treasure to explore, and a visit can begin in Piazza Umberto I, the beating heart of the village. Some of the most important buildings are located here, such as Palazzo Tamburelli-Malaspina, now the Town Hall, and the Malaspina Castle, with its characteristic tower, known as the ‘Torre delle Streghe’ (Witches‘ Tower).
