The trail begins with a climb to the source of the Nice Creek. This initial section of the trail is enveloped by lush forest that, in addition to its scenic beauty, has fascinating geological features. Among these, the gully walls and sulfur springs are particularly remarkable, offering a unique natural spectacle and enriching the hiking experience with elements of scientific interest.
Continuing on, we reach the Eagle Trail, which enters the Oltrepadano Castanetum, a historic area dating back to the late Roman period and the Middle Ages. Here, the vegetation is dominated by towering chestnut trees, once fundamental to the local economy. To walk through these woods is to take a plunge into the past, imagining how our ancestors lived and worked in symbiosis with nature.
One of the most striking moments of the trail is the view of Oramala Castle. This ancient fortification stands majestically among the trees, evoking images of knights and ladies, battles and medieval life.
Along the trail we encounter charcoal kilns, places that tell a lesser-known but crucial story: charcoal production. These sites, used until the early 1900s, show how wood was turned into charcoal on site, with techniques handed down from generation to generation. The first charcoal kiln is located in the first part of the trail, offering visitors a firsthand view of ancient working practices.
Halfway along the trail, the descent to St. Albans begins. This part of the trail is steep and scenic, providing breathtaking views and an encounter with a group of centuries-old chestnut trees, true natural monuments. During the descent, a second charcoal pile is also visited, completing the picture of an activity that deeply marked the lives of local communities.
The return to Sant‘Albano marks the end of the itinerary, which is much more than just a walk in the woods.
