In the enchanting Oltrepò Pavese, home of celebrated wines, lies a lesser-known oenological treasure of extraordinary quality: Moscato di Volpara. This white wine, produced in the small municipality of the same name, enchants with its unique aromatic profile and fascinating history. Let us discover together what makes Moscato di Volpara special and why it deserves a place of honour among the great Italian wines.

In the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese, an area famous for its rich wine production, lies a lesser-known but extraordinarily valuable variety: Moscato di Volpara. This white wine, produced in the small municipality of Volpara, is a true oenological jewel, often overshadowed by the more famous Oltrepò Metodo Classico DOCG, Cruasè, Oltrepò Pavese DOC Bonarda, Barbera, Sangue di Giuda, Pinot Nero and Buttafuoco.

The Volpara hills are dedicated to the cultivation of Moscato Bianco, a grape considered among the oldest in the world, introduced to Europe by the Knights of the Crusades. During the fascist era, Volpara Moscato was particularly appreciated by the regime‘s hierarchs, and even the local parish priest produced and sold wine from the church vineyards.

Moscato di Volpara is distinguished by its original organoleptic profile. Available in sweet and sparkling versions, this wine offers a sugary flavour balanced by good acidity, which enhances and preserves its natural aromas over time. The intense and intriguing aroma is characterised by strong fruity hints of peach and apricot, enriched by notes of aromatic herbs.

In order to protect and valorise Volpara Muscat, the municipality established a consortium and delimited the production territory, thus ensuring compliance with strict regulations. Furthermore, in 1999, the Tempio del Moscato was created, a tourist promotion centre located in a small 17th-century deconsecrated church. This venue, reached by a stone staircase, offers visitors the opportunity to taste platters of cold meats and cheeses accompanied by an excellent house Moscato, outside on rustic wooden tables.

Although less well-known than the famous Moscato d‘Asti, Moscato di Volpara has nothing to envy in terms of pleasantness and aromaticity. Its uniqueness and quality make it a true pride for the municipality of Volpara, a small but significant contribution to the rich wine tradition of the Oltrepò Pavese.
