In the heart of Voghera, in Piazza Duomo, stands a magnificent example of medieval civil architecture: Palazzo Nava. This historic building, dating back to the 13th-14th centuries, has been restored to its former glory thanks to the restoration work of General Luigi Nava. Today, Palazzo Nava tells a fascinating story of tradition and cultural preservation.

In Piazza Duomo in Voghera is a fascinating and unique building, Palazzo Nava, a rare example of medieval civil architecture that has survived in the town. This historic building, whose portico has been faithfully reconstructed maintaining the typical features of Voghera‘s ancient porticoes, offers an authentic glimpse into the city‘s past.

The architectural style of Palazzo Nava allows its construction to be dated between the 13th and 14th centuries. Originally, the building belonged to the Barenghi family. It was only in 1904 that the Italian general Luigi Nava purchased the palace, undertaking a major restoration project that ensured its preservation and return to its former glory. Nava transformed the palace into a private residence, ensuring that the renovation respected the medieval layout characteristic of the buildings surrounding Piazza Duomo.

One of the most remarkable elements of the palace is the arcade, a medieval-style reconstruction built in the early 20th century. The ogival arcades and wooden ceiling are faithful testimonies to the architecture of the period. The first floor of the palace houses a unique example in the square of lancet windows, while at the top of the building one can admire coats of arms and shields that further enrich its historical and artistic value.

The arcade of Palazzo Nava is shrouded in local legend. It is said that, in the past, those condemned to death were led from the castle, where they were imprisoned, to the gallows in Piazza del Duomo, passing under these very arches. This story gave rise to a superstition among the old inhabitants of Voghera, who avoided passing under the arcade for fear of bad luck.

The history of Palazzo Nava is a fascinating journey through the centuries, a tangible example of how the past can be preserved and enhanced. The restoration carried out by General Nava not only saved a piece of medieval history, but also returned a symbol of its cultural heritage to the city. Today, Palazzo Nava is not only a historical building, but a monument that tells the story of Voghera and its traditions.
