Located north-east of the municipality of Varzi, the hamlet of Pietragavina rises majestically, dominating the right side of the Staffora Valley. This small village, inhabited by less than 200 people, is a historical and natural jewel, famous above all for its ancient castle.

The Castle of Pietragavina, first mentioned in an imperial diploma of Frederick Barbarossa in 1164, is a fascinating testimony to medieval history. Originally belonging to the Malaspina family of Varzi, this imposing stone manor stands on top of the hill, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the valley below.

The structure of the castle is semicircular and develops around the main tower. Inside is a charming garden of about 1,000 square metres, adorned in the centre by an ancient well. Although today the castle is privately owned, its majesty can be admired from the outside, making the ascent to the village an experience not to be missed.

Surrounded by lush nature, Pietragavina offers an idyllic landscape of hills, countryside and woods. From the castle, one can take a walk through the woods of chestnut, hazelnut and oak trees. These nature trails are the habitat of numerous wild animals such as foxes, squirrels and woodpeckers, which populate this unspoilt area.

Pietragavina is renowned for the harvesting and tasting of chestnuts, which grow abundantly in the surrounding forests. This autumn fruit is celebrated every year in early October with the Sagra della Castagna, a festival that attracts visitors from all over the Oltrepò Pavese. In 2022, the festival reached its 60th edition, consolidating its importance as a traditional event in the region.

Pietragavina is not only a place of historical and natural interest, but also a haven of peace and tranquillity. Far from the hustle and bustle of modern life, Pietragavina offers a unique opportunity to rediscover contact with nature and immerse yourself in history.

Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover or simply looking for a place to find calm, Pietragavina has something to offer everyone. Its imposing castle, age-old traditions and natural beauty make this village a hidden treasure of the Oltrepò Pavese, worthy of an in-depth visit.
