Located in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese, Cigognola is a picturesque village that boasts one of the most fascinating castles in the region. The Castle of Cigognola, a majestic structure dominating the Scuropasso Valley, has a rich and varied history dating back to the 12th century. Originally built by the House of Sannazzaro, the castle was used for defensive purposes to guard traffic in the nearby plain.

Cigognola Castle was built around the 12th century by one of the most influential noble families in the area, the Sannazzaro. Its strategic position allowed it to effectively control the passage along the Scuropasso Valley and the surrounding plain. However, with the passage of time and changing military needs, the castle gradually lost its defensive functions.
Over the centuries, Cigognola Castle underwent several transformations that led it to become an elegant aristocratic residence. In the early 19th century, the castle underwent extensive restoration and remodelling in the Neo-Gothic style. This romantic reinterpretation of the Middle Ages included the erection of an imposing square tower and the construction of walls with Ghibelline battlements.
The portals were adorned with coats of arms and elegant terracotta decorations, adding a touch of refinement to the castle‘s architecture. Despite the modifications, some external features of the ancient manor remained virtually unchanged, maintaining the historic charm of the structure.
In addition to the castle, Cigognola offers other attractions worth exploring. One of these is the Parco delle Rimembranze (Remembrance Park), an ideal place for a walk in the cool of the vegetation. The park is shaded by centuries-old horse chestnuts and cedars of Lebanon, creating a peaceful and relaxing environment.
Overlooking a vast panorama that reaches the Alps and the Monte Rosa massif, the Parco delle Rimembranze is a perfect place to enjoy the natural beauty of the region. At the heart of the park stands the monument to the Fallen of the two World Wars, a solemn tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for their country.
Cigognola is a perfect example of how history and natural beauty can blend harmoniously. Its castle, with its rich history and elegant architectural modifications, represents a journey through time that fascinates visitors.
