In the heart of the enchanting Oltrepò Pavese lies a heritage of history and nobility embodied by the Malaspina family. Descendants of the ancient Obertenghi, the Malaspina have left an indelible mark

In the fascinating Oltrepò Pavese territory, the Malaspina family emerges as a symbol of nobility and power that has left an indelible mark on local history. Descendants of the illustrious Obertenghi, the Malaspina distinguished themselves from the 12th century onwards, expanding their influence not only in Liguria, but also in the northern regions of Italy.

It was in the 13th century that the Malaspina arrived in Oltrepò Pavese, answering the call of the local lords to defend the territory from the intrigues of neighbouring feudal lords. Their role was not limited to defence: the family actively contributed to the construction of castles and residences that still dominate the landscape today.

One of the most illustrious examples is Oramala Castle, an imposing fortress erected in the 13th century near Varzi. Initially a defensive dwelling, the castle underwent extensions and renovations over the centuries that increased its majesty, transforming it into a first-rate centre of economic and political power.

But the influence of the Malaspina family extended far beyond Oramala. The town of Varzi itself holds a rich historical heritage that celebrates the ancient prestige of the family. Historic palaces, medieval streets and religious buildings bear witness to the rule of the Malaspina family, evoking an era of splendour and authority.

Godiasco Salice Terme, Nazzano di Rivanazzano Terme and the Brallo are also rich in evidence of the Malaspina, which still today evoke the family‘s glorious past. These places are not only symbols of architectural grandeur, but also custodians of stories of courage and leadership that shaped the destiny of the Oltrepò Pavese.

The legacy of the Malaspina family lives on through the generations, witnessed by the imposing ruins of their castles and the towns that prospered under their rule. Walking through the streets of Varzi or exploring the towers of Oramala, it is impossible not to be transported back in time, immersed in the magnificence of an era that continues to inspire and fascinate even today.
