Santa Giuletta, an enchanting village located in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese, boasts a rich and fascinating history that has its roots in a Gallo-Liguri settlement, which later became a Roman garrison. This small municipality is renowned for its wine-growing tradition, documented since the year 1000.

Over the centuries, Santa Giuletta was the domain of several noble families. In 1400 it became a fief of the Beccarla family, later passed to the Trotti and Belcredi of Pavia, and in 1700 to the Isimbardi. The municipality is historically divided into two hamlets: Villa, located in the foothills adjacent to the road leading to Piacenza, where historic villas and palaces stand, and Castello, on the first hills.

The Castle of Santa Giuletta

The Castle, built on the top of the hill in the 12th century, today preserves only the ancient cellars, which once housed the prisons. The current complex appears as an 18th-century villa in neoclassical style, a place that still enchants visitors with its majesty and panoramic view.

The Parish Church of the Castle

Another symbol of Santa Giuletta is the Parish Church of the Castle, built in 1200 and dedicated to Santa Julitta or Giulitta. This church, reopened after numerous restorations, has been enlarged and renovated several times over the centuries. A distinctive feature of the church is the curious bell tower in the shape of a crenellated tower, which adds a unique touch to its architecture.

Santa Giuletta and the Via Emilia

Santa Giuletta‘s strategic position along the Via Emilia played a crucial role in its development. This ancient road, crucial for trade, was dotted with post stations where the convoys of traders and transporters could stop for refreshments or overnight stays. There were four main inns in Santa Giuletta, as well as numerous taverns and wine taverns.

The Dolls of Santa Giuletta

In the 1950s, Santa Giuletta was named the Italian doll capital thanks to its rich handcrafted production of artistic dolls. Today, the Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo (Museum of Dolls and Toys) collects specimens dating from the 1930s to the 1970s, offering a fascinating journey through time through these precious artefacts.

Santa Giuletta is a hidden jewel of the Oltrepò Pavese, a place where history, winemaking tradition and craftsmanship intertwine in a fascinating cultural mosaic. Visiting this village means immersing oneself in a past rich in events and discoveries, admiring historical architecture such as the Castle and the Parish Church, and breathing in the unique atmosphere of a territory that has been able to preserve its roots while looking to the future. Whether exploring the doll museum, strolling among the vineyards or simply enjoying the beauty of the hilly landscape, Santa Giuletta offers an unforgettable experience to every visitor.
