The Oltrepò Pavese is an area rich in history, nature and food and wine traditions, and the social page «camminadoinoltrepo» is committed to promoting this beautiful corner of Italy through unique hiking routes. Today we invite you to participate in a new itinerary that will take you to discover the heart of Pinot Noir, an internationally renowned and appreciated wine. Let‘s get ready for an 8.80 km journey that will take about 2 hours and 15 minutes, through vineyards, hills, and fascinating rural landscapes.
The hike starts in Via A. Achille, in the municipality of Montecalvo Versiggia. From here, we take the same street uphill and turn right at the crossroads into Via Palazzo. We walk for 200 metres and turn left into Via Cà Nova. Continuing on, we reach the Calatroni farm, officially entering the municipal territory of Montecalvo. At this point, the road bends to the left and we follow it following the signs for winetrekking, a path through the vineyards created by the Calatroni family. This section takes us to the locality of Casa Grande, and keeping to the cart track, we reach Località Casa Bella. The views here are breathtaking, with vineyards as far as the eye can see painting the landscape green and golden.
Back on the tarmac, we proceed towards Località Carichetta. Having passed the last houses of Poggio-Pornenzo, we turn left at the crossroads to reach Località Valdonica. Continuing straight along the same road, we leave the municipal palace and the Pinot Nero cultural centre on our left, a reference point for lovers of this wine. We continue in the direction of Ruino, keeping to the pavement on the left of Provincial Road 201, until we reach Frazione Castello. Here, if open, we highly recommend a visit to the Parish Church and the Corkscrew Museum, an experience that combines culture and tradition. From the hamlet of Castello, we ascend to Montecalvo Castle (12th century), visible only from the outside, following a short path. This ancient building offers a glimpse into the region‘s medieval history and an unparalleled panoramic view.
Back on Provincial Road 201, we stop at the beautiful vantage point overlooking the Montecalvo ‘caldera‘. From here, the path leads us to the Pieve della Madonna dell‘Uva (12th century), a fascinating place of worship, rich in spirituality. We return to Frazione Crocetta and, in view of the Town Hall, turn left towards Broni.
Then, we follow the signs for Cà Torregiani-Poggio-Cà Sartori, retracing the outward journey without turning onto side roads to Località Casa Bella, and from here, we return to the starting point. Those who wish to continue a little further can continue to Località Villanova, Cà Terzoni, Via Palazzo and finally return to the starting point.
This hike is a journey of discovery of the Oltrepò Pavese, an area rich in charm and tradition. Each step brings us closer to the culture of Pinot Noir, among lush vineyards and enchanting landscapes. Thanks to "camminadoinoltrepo", we can immerse ourselves in this unique experience, exploring paths that tell ancient stories and authentic flavours. Enjoy your walk!
