Saffron, often called red gold, is an ancient and precious spice, appreciated since Egyptian and Roman times for its unmistakable flavour and beneficial properties. Originally from Asia Minor, saffron cultivation has spread throughout the Mediterranean basin, finding fertile ground in Italy to develop. In particular, Oltrepò Pavese, with its favourable climate and soil, has proved an ideal environment for the production of this prized spice.
The Oltrepò Pavese Saffron Association has been operating for about a year, with the mission of identifying and supporting small farms that produce high quality saffron, as well as promoting other food and wine excellences of the area. Since its establishment, the Association has set itself the main objective of enhancing local resources and contributing to the economic and cultural growth of the Oltrepò Pavese area.
A significant goal, in the sights of the board of directors chaired by Attilio Bianchi, was the creation of a location where all member companies could sell their products to the public. This ambitious project has finally become a reality: the inauguration of the sales outlet represents a fundamental step in the redevelopment and promotion of the area, offering consumers the opportunity to purchase high quality products directly from local producers.
The Board of Directors is proud to invite all citizens and food and wine enthusiasts to the opening of the sales point, which will be held on Saturday 13 July at 6 p.m. in Via Luigi Mazza 6 in Varzi. It will be a unique opportunity to meet the producers up close, taste their products, and discover the wonders of our territory.
The history of saffron is thus enriched by a new chapter, written with passion and dedication by the members of the Associazione Zafferano Oltrepò Pavese and its member farms. This new space will not only be a sales outlet, but also a place for meeting and cultural exchange, where tradition and innovation come together to offer the best of local food and wine.
