The "camminandoinoltrepo" social page is a reference point for all lovers of hiking in the fascinating Oltrepò Pavese area. Today, "camminandoinoltrepo" invites us to participate in an exciting new excursion: a panoramic ring-route that will take us from Oliva Gessi to Calvignano and Montalto Pavese, through the Rile San Zeno reservoir.

Today‘s excursion: Oliva Gessi - Calvignano - Montalto Pavese

Starting from the picturesque Church Square in Oliva Gessi, we prepare to explore a route that runs for approximately 12.5-14 km, with an estimated duration of between 2 hours and 30 minutes and 3 hours. The entire route is on an asphalt road, making this excursion accessible to everyone, even the less experienced.

Our adventure begins with a descent down the steps of the Church of St Martin, known as the ‘Martyrs‘ Climb‘ in honour of Saints Versiglia and Caravario. From here, we head right along Provincial Road 46, passing the local cemetery. At the first fork, we follow the sign for Via Cassinera - Calvignano, plunging downhill through the picturesque hamlets of Fossa, Cassinera and Molino del Cevino.

Along the way, we pass by the Defilippi Winery, renowned for its fine wines. A small bridge allows us to cross the Rile di San Zeno, which in this area collects the waters of the Morone and Boschi valleys. Continuing without diversions, we arrive at the municipality of Calvignano.

This charming village is worth a visit to appreciate its tranquillity and historical beauty. After exploring Calvignano, we resume our journey following Provincial Road 188 in the direction of Montalto Pavese. Along the way, we take a break at "Big Bench 149", a large panoramic bench offering a splendid view of the Montalto Gravel Valley and the Travaglino Vini estate.

We finally reach the heart of the municipality of Montalto Pavese, where we can enjoy a well-deserved rest. This village, rich in tradition and famous for its wines, warmly welcomes travellers. After restoring body and mind, we resume our journey towards Via Trieste. Following the signs for Oliva Gessi, we head towards Sguernazzole, taking care to turn left at the first fork.

The route takes us through the municipal road to the historical centre of the medieval ‘Olivia‘. Here we can admire the picturesque rural buildings, cross the centuries-old brick arch and observe what was once the castle, now transformed into an elegant palace surrounded by a well-kept garden. We pass by the Oliva estate and, after a short while, we are once again at the Piazza della Chiesa di Oliva Gessi, the starting and finishing point of our panoramic loop.

This excursion in the Oltrepò Pavese area is an unmissable experience for all those who wish to immerse themselves in nature and discover hidden corners of an area rich in history and beauty. "camminandoinoltrepo" continues to be our trusted guide in these adventures, offering us the opportunity to explore enchanting trails and experience unforgettable moments. Happy walking to all!
