Hidden in the hills of the municipality of Rivanazzano Terme, the village of Nazzano conceals a historical jewel: Nazzano Castle. This imposing manor, whose origins are shrouded in mystery, probably dates back to the 11th century and was built by the Malaspina family. However, it is widely believed by historians that a pre-existing fortification, predating the year 1000, already stood on this strategic site, as is often the case for many similar structures.

Nazzano Castle was designed to dominate the surrounding valley, a role that has determined much of its troubled history. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, undergoing numerous remodelling and transformations. In 1613, the Mezzabarba counts of Pavia converted it from an austere fortress to an elegant noble residence, enriching it with refined architectural details. This transformation marked a turning point in the castle‘s history, giving it an aura of prestige and sophistication.

In 1712, the Nazzano Castle passed into the hands of the Rovereto marquises, who continued the modernisation and extension work. Thanks to their intervention, the structure took on the appearance that we can still admire today. It was in 1905 that the Rovereto family undertook a further renovation project, consolidating the structure and adapting it as a private residence. This restoration has kept the historical charm of the castle intact, preserving its architectural integrity.

The castle is built entirely of stone, a material that lends solidity and grandeur to the structure. Inside, it houses a chapel and no less than 40 rooms, each with its own story to tell. One of the most interesting features of the castle is the fortified shelter, which once housed one of the most prestigious war schools in Europe, founded by the famous condottiere Jacopo Dal Verme. This detail underlines the strategic and military importance of the castle in the European historical panorama.

Today, Nazzano Castle continues to dominate the green hills surrounding it, offering a spectacular view of a landscape that has remained largely unchanged over the centuries. The majesty of the structure and its panoramic position evoke images of a glorious past, when the Malaspina, Mezzabarba and Rovereto families admired the same valley from these ancient walls. The Nazzano Castle is not only a historical building, but a symbol of power and beauty that has spanned the centuries, carrying with it the traces of a rich and fascinating history.
