The Oltrepò Pavese is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. Thanks to ‘camminandoinoltrepo‘, a social page dedicated to the promotion of nature trails in this splendid area, we have the opportunity to explore the territory once again. This time, the proposed itinerary is the Sentiero delle Fontane, a fascinating route that will take us through the natural and historical wonders of Poggio Ferrato.
The Fountains Trail: route details
- Distance: 7 km
- Duration: 2 hours
- Type of road: Mainly unpaved
- Start/finish: Poggio Ferrato
The Sentiero delle Fontane begins at the votive chapel in Via della Vigna, a starting point that immediately immerses us in an atmosphere of devotion and tranquillity. Following Via Ramniga for a short distance, we turn left at the crossroads, following trail marker 81, and enter a dirt road that was part of the old Strada dei Rossi. This downhill stretch takes us to cross the Colarello stream, thus joining our path to the Sentiero degli Oratori (Path of the Oratories) (no. 80), and leads us to Monticelli, where we find the first of the fountains that characterise this route.
Through Historic and Natural Beauties
From Monticelli, we continue on an asphalt road following the signpost for Casarasco. At the next fork in the road, we turn right towards the Oratory of San Rocco, a small architectural jewel, and reach the hamlet of Casarasco, where we can admire the remains of the Malaspina castle dating from the 9th-10th centuries. Continuing our walk towards the hamlet of Monte, we make a diversion to the ‘Belvedere di San Rocco‘, where a panoramic panel offers us a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills. This place is made even more significant by the presence of a red bench, a symbol of the fight against violence.
The Springs: A Heritage to Discover
Before entering the town of Monte, we encounter the Boiolo spring. A short diversions then takes us to the Fontanino spring, a suggestive place where the water gushes out fresh and clear. Turning back, we plunge into the small village of Monte, one of the oldest in the valley, and resume our route on the Anello del Re (King‘s Ring). Passing the Fracion fountain, we enter the Castanetum, a wooded area rich in oaks and chestnut trees that gives us a moment of coolness and serenity.
A sign guides us to the Croesa spring, a charming place surrounded by greenery, where we can refresh ourselves and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Resuming the path, we arrive at the Calasco spring, the most active in the valley, which surprises us with its constant and lively flow. Continuing along the path, we reach the pools of the Moglie fountain, located just below the village of Poggio Ferrato, the last fountain on the itinerary.
