‘camminandoinoltrepo’ invites us to explore a new and fascinating route in the Oltrepò Pavese area. This 12.5 km loop itinerary, starting and ending in Pietra de‘ Giorgi, will take us through breathtaking landscapes rich in history, making every step an unforgettable experience.
‘camminandoinoltrepo’, the famous social page dedicated to promoting and sharing the nature and scenic routes of the Oltrepò Pavese area, has unveiled a new and fascinating itinerary. This time, the adventure will take us from Pietra de‘ Giorgi to Torricella Verzate, through a 12.5 km loop that promises breathtaking views and a pleasant hiking experience. With an estimated duration of about 2 hours and 40 minutes, the route runs mainly on asphalt roads, making it practicable all year round, although it is advisable to pay attention to the unpaved sections in case of mud.
The start and finish are in Pietra de‘ Giorgi, in the picturesque Piazza S.L. Gonzaga. This starting point already offers a foretaste of the wonders that await us. From here, we will set out in a westerly direction until we reach Località 5 Strade, from where a panoramic ridge unravels. This stretch offers spectacular views of the plains and the Alpine arc on one side and the hills and mountains of the Apennines on the other, making it one of the highlights of the hike.
Following the signs for Strada Isimbarda and keeping to the left at the fork, we pass the Azienda Agricola Isimbarda, a place that represents the meeting of nature and local agricultural tradition.
Continuing along the cypress avenue, we pass Casa Lolla and continue until we reach Castello, a hamlet of Santa Giuletta. This locality is known for its ancient castle, transformed centuries ago into a neoclassical mansion, with a magnificent garden and park that are well worth a visit.
From Castello, we will take Via Castello to the junction with Via Chiesa, and then continue slightly and take Via Momplò, a road that will lead us to Borgo Santuletta. This picturesque village offers an enchanting view of the Santuario della Passione, our final destination in Torricella Verzate. We will reach the sanctuary by following a path through the vineyards, starting from the farmstead located just 50 metres before the village.
Once on the provincial road, we will turn right and follow the signs for the sanctuary, a place of spirituality and contemplation. After visiting the sanctuary, we will return to the crossroads and ascend towards Pietra de‘ Giorgi, passing through the hamlets of Ronchi, Casa Guarnone and Valsorda. This part of the route will take us back to Località 5 Strade and finally to the car park where we started.
Once back in Pietra de‘ Giorgi, you cannot miss a visit to the Castle of Pietra de’ Giorgi, one of the oldest in the Oltrepò Pavese, dating back to 1012. This castle represents a piece of local history and offers a fascinating insight into past eras.
This hike of medium difficulty is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the nature and history of the Oltrepò Pavese. ‘camminandoinoltrepo’ continues to surprise us with routes that not only offer scenic beauty, but also a deep connection with the territory. Happy walking to all!
