The Oltrepò Pavese, with its rolling hills and breathtaking landscapes, continues to amaze hikers and nature lovers. "camminandoinoltrepo" invites us to rediscover the hidden treasures of this wonderful land. This social page dedicated to promoting the itineraries and paths of the Oltrepò, accompanies us this time along a fascinating ring that connects Oliva Gessi to Montalto Pavese, a 10.2-kilometre route, with an estimated duration of about 2 hours.

A route through history and nature

We start from the church square in Oliva Gessi, an ancient village that preserves the charm of the past intact. From here, we follow Provincial Road 46 for a few hundred metres, immediately immersing ourselves in a journey that is a plunge into history. Oliva Gessi, with its medieval town centre, welcomes us through a centuries-old brick arch. The route winds gently downhill to the fork indicating the road to Montalto Pavese.

Through suggestive localities

The route continues without deviating, passing places of timeless charm. On our right we leave Località Occhio and, continuing, Località Bossola on the left. On the municipal road we reach Località Sguernazzole, and then we skirt Località Aprilia and Località Sabbione. From here, the view of the reddish castle of Montalto Pavese, perched on the top of a wooded hill, begins to dominate the panorama, promising a majestic spectacle upon arrival.

Towards Montalto Pavese
Having passed the Località Cavazzo, characterised by a beautiful red brick and stone building, after about 200 metres we come to a crossroads where we turn left following the sign for Mondino. The descent takes us through the localities of Colombara, Mondino and Ca Nova di Mondino, until we reach the small bridge over Rio della Valle. From here, the route continues straight ahead, passing Cascina Coraggioso and arriving at Località Merizzolo.

Return to Oliva Gessi

We continue straight ahead, passing the localities Casa Manelli, Valle and Fornace. At the crossroads, we turn left and begin to climb again towards Oliva Gessi. We cross the bridge over the Rile di Verzate, reach Località Rosso and, keeping to the provincial road, finally arrive at the ancient village of Oliva Gessi. Here, the picturesque rural buildings, the birthplace of San Luigi Versiglia, the Church of San Martino and the ancient castle, now transformed into an elegant palace surrounded by a refined garden, welcome us with their timeless beauty.

An invitation to discovery

This excursion, organised by "camminandoinoltrepo", is not only an opportunity to enjoy the natural and historical beauty of the Oltrepò, but also a way to rediscover the pleasure of walking in company, of sharing experiences and of finding oneself immersed in landscapes that tell ancient stories. A route that, despite its simplicity, offers enchanting views and moments of pure wonder.
