The FAI Giovani - Oltrepò Pavese, in collaboration with Dr Paolo Losio, head of protected areas in the province of Pavia, is organising a day of nature and discovery at the Pietra Corva Alpine Botanical Garden on Saturday 25 May 2024. This event is an extraordinary opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty and richness of Alpine flora, exploring a veritable treasure chest of biodiversity located at an altitude of almost 1,000 metres.
The Pietra Corva Alpine Botanical Garden: A Treasury of Biodiversity
The Pietra Corva Alpine Botanical Garden is a unique place where unspoilt nature displays all its extraordinary beauty and diversity. Founded in the 1960s, the garden covers an area of about 10 hectares and is home to a wide range of mountain flower species from the Alps and the Apennines, as well as exotic plants of great botanical interest. Thanks to its altitude and favourable location, the garden is an ideal habitat for many rare and endangered species.
During the visit, participants will have the opportunity to admire a wide range of alpine plants, including rhododendrons, gentians, primroses and saxifrages. In addition, one of the most fascinating elements of the garden is the pond, populated by water lilies and newts, which contribute to an aquatic ecosystem of great scientific and naturalistic interest.
The Biodiversity Challeng
A visit to the Pietra Corva Alpine Botanical Garden is not only an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature, but also a moment to reflect on the importance of biodiversity and the challenges it faces. In the last 40 years, the global population of wild species has declined by 60 per cent, and 75 per cent of the planet‘s land and 40 per cent of its marine environments have been drastically changed by man (source: EU Commission). The loss of biodiversity is a crucial issue that concerns us all, and the FAI, through its initiatives, intends to raise awareness of this fundamental issue.
The ‘Walks in Biodiversity’ promoted by FAI are events designed to bring people closer to nature, deepening their knowledge of plant and animal species and better understanding their role in ecosystems. Awareness and education are essential tools for protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable development.
Excursion to Mount Pan Perduto and Mount Pietra Corva
After a visit to the Botanical Garden, the event will continue with a hike to Monte Pan Perduto. This route offers the opportunity to explore an area of great geological and natural interest. The black ophiolite rocks along the trail tell the geological history of the region, while the wild orchids that grow wild are a symbol of the richness and variety of the local flora.
The walk, which covers a total of 4 km, is also suitable for those with little hiking experience. The organisers recommend wearing trekking shoes and clothing suitable for hiking, and carrying water and snacks to stay hydrated and have energy along the way.
For those who want an even more complete experience, it will be possible to take a short diversions to climb to Monte Pietra Corva. From this vantage point you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Oltrepò Pavese and Val Tidone, a panorama that amply repays the effort of the climb.
