The Oltrepò Pavese, with its breathtaking landscapes and rich history, continues to reveal its secrets to the most curious and adventurous travellers. This time, thanks to the indefatigable passion of ‘camminandoinoltrepo’, we will venture along paths and trails that will lead us to discover the traces of the young Einstein, immersing ourselves in the ancient part of Casteggio and among the historical residences in its surroundings.
With a distance of 8.90 kilometres and a duration of approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes, this route will take us along mostly paved roads, starting and finishing in Piazza Martiri della Libertà in Casteggio.
The journey begins with a climb up the steps that lead us to Via Cantù, where we take the Parco delle Rimembranze path to the impressive Victory Monument. From here, we cross Piazza Castello to reach the charming churches of S. Sebastiano and S. Pietro.
Continuing along Via Castello and Via S. Visconti, we reach the Marangoni house, which once hosted the young Albert Einstein, offering us a fascinating glimpse of his youth. We return to Via Castello and head towards Via Baratta to admire the majestic Palazzo Mezzabarba and pay a visit to the charming Certosa Cantù.
We continue our walk along Via Fam. Cignoli, then turn right into Via F.Ili Vigorelli as far as the crossroads, where we turn left towards Calvignano. Having crossed Provincial Road 188, we again take Via F.Ili Vigorelli, amidst renowned vineyards and historic residences such as Villa Freciarossa and Villa Pegazzera, immersing ourselves in an atmosphere steeped in history and beauty.
After about two kilometres, we reach the picturesque Fontanone Estate, where the young Einstein stopped to harvest grapes, leaving us to imagine his experiences in these generous lands. We turn left onto Via Castel del Lupo and reach Mairano, where we find the prestigious Fondazione Bussolera Branca, enriching our journey with a cultural and artistic stop.
Turning back, we head towards Casteggio, with two options to conclude our adventure: continue along the Mollie road as far as Via F.Ili Vigorelli and from here reach the car park, or take the Mollie road as far as the right-hand bend in Via T. Bernini, arriving in Casteggio and finding our starting point again.
