Hidden among the gentle undulations of the Oltrepò Pavese hills, the village of Pietra dè Giorgi emerges as a historical and scenic jewel that enchants visitors with its timeless beauty and rich history.

Situated on the second circle of hills, at an altitude of about 300 metres above sea level, this ancient village offers a breathtaking view of the majestic Po Valley, stretching as far as the northern horizon, and the profile of the imposing Alps that soar on the horizon on a clear day. Towards the south-east, the landscape transforms into gentle ridges that extend to the foothills of the Apennines, creating an evocative backdrop for this picturesque location.

History and Architecture

The historical heart of Pietra dè Giorgi contains architectural treasures that narrate centuries of history and tradition. Prominent among them is the majestic Pietra Castle, one of the oldest manors in the Oltrepò Pavese, whose history dates back to 1012. This imposing fortress has hosted noble families and seigniories over the centuries, and even though today it is privately owned, it still retains its majesty and ancient charm. Of the four towers that once characterised it in the 15th century, only one remains, bearing witness to its glorious past. The walls, in some places, reach a thickness of 2 metres and feature the characteristic saw-tooth decoration of the Ghibelline families, which tell of the struggles and alliances of times past.

Next to the castle, the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta di Castagnara tells an equally fascinating story. Legend has it that its foundation dates back to the end of the 13th century, when Metelliano Massimo Orsini, praying for the recovery of his sick son, had an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the chestnut forest near his home. This miraculous event led to the construction of the original church on the site of the apparition, which was blessed on 15 August 1300. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several alterations and extensions, and today houses valuable artistic elements inside, including an altar in red Verona marble dating back to 1730 and frescoes by the painter R. Gambini from 1926.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

But Pietra dè Giorgi is not only history and architecture: it is also a paradise for lovers of nature and outdoor activities. Surrounded by lush vineyards, the landscape offers a network of paths and dirt tracks perfect for hiking or cycling. Along these routes, you can fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area and venture out to discover the roe deer, hares, squirrels and a variety of birds that inhabit the region. A short route winding southwards even leads to the 45th parallel, offering a unique experience for geography enthusiasts.

Local Gastronomy

For gourmet visitors, Pietra dè Giorgi offers a wide selection of food and wine delights to enjoy. Numerous wineries in the region welcome visitors for tastings of renowned local wines, allowing them to savour the unique flavours of the area. In addition, a local restaurant offers culinary delights prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients, while an artisanal delicatessen delights palates with a selection of traditional cured meats.

Hospitality and Wellness

For those who wish to prolong their experience in Pietra dè Giorgi, the village also offers cosy hospitality options. A local bed-and-breakfast welcomes visitors in a familiar and comfortable atmosphere, offering them the chance to fully immerse themselves in the daily life of the village and to fully enjoy all it has to offer.

All in all, Pietra dè Giorgi reveals itself to be a hidden treasure among the hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, a destination that enchants visitors with its natural beauty, rich history and food and wine offerings. A place where time seems to stand still and where every corner tells a fascinating story, making every visit an unforgettable experience.
