Hidden amidst the majestic hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, the Castle of Pietragavina stands as a monument to the past, a silent witness to the medieval eras that shaped the region. Located a short distance from the picturesque village of Varzi, this castle, with its imposing semicircular structure built entirely of stone, captures the imagination of anyone lucky enough to cross its path.

Ancient History

The origins of the Castle of Pietragavina date back to medieval times, when the region was the scene of battles and conquests between the powerful noble families of the time. Initially a fiefdom of the Malaspina, one of the most influential families in the area, the castle played a crucial role in the defence and sighting strategies of the surrounding area. Later, it came under the rule of the Dal Verme, another noble family of great historical importance in the Oltrepò Pavese.

Architecture and Characteristics

The imposing structure of Pietragavina Castle is built around its main tower, which stands proudly on the hill at an altitude of 860 metres. The tower, equipped with an internal staircase, provides access to the upper floor and the panoramic terrace that offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding valley. Even today, it is still possible to admire the battlements and embrasures on the walls, tangible evidence of its defensive function over the centuries. Inside the castle, visitors can explore a series of evocative rooms, including an entrance hall, a cosy living room with a fireplace, a study overlooking the surrounding garden, a dining room steeped in history, a kitchen evoking ancient flavours and a bathroom reflecting the style and charm of the era.

The Garden and its Treasures

The Castle of Pietragavina is surrounded by an enchanting garden of about 1,000 square metres, enriched by the presence of an ancient well that tells stories of distant times. This green space, cared for with love and dedication, offers guests the opportunity to stroll among ancient plants and the scent of flowers, completely immersing themselves in the magical atmosphere that envelops the castle and its surroundings. A Place of Beauty and History Although today Pietragavina Castle is privately owned, its majesty and charm continue to attract visitors from all corners of the world. Climbing to its summit is an experience that offers not only a spectacular view of the castle and the valley below, but also the feeling of being catapulted back in time, to an era of knights and nobles, of battles and refined courts. In a rapidly changing world, Pietragavina Castle remains as a beacon of history and beauty, a tangible symbol of the past that continues to illuminate the present and inspire future generations.
