Route: Montebello della Battaglia

The departure is from the suggestive car park of Palazzo Bellisomi, the perfect meeting point to embark on a journey through the centuries. The itinerary winds its way along mixed roads, combining asphalt and dirt stretches, for a total of about 2 ½ hours of walking. The altitude varies from 93 metres to 174 metres, providing a full view of the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The adventure begins along the last stretch of Via Savonarola, with the Villa Serpi Gloria Park on the left. We then enter a dirt road, passing the turnoff for the La Roveda farmhouse and reaching the charming Cascina Monticelli, the Fattoria delle Ginestre and the majestic Villa Lunati Mazza.

After immersing ourselves in these historical jewels, we turn right to admire the entrance to Villa Lunati Mazza and its large garden. Continuing along the route, we stop at the church of Genestrello, an authentic gem testifying to Montebello della Battaglia‘s rich past. Turning back at the crossroads, we take the sheep-track in front of us, which will lead us to the small and ancient cemetery of Genestrello, an evocative place rich in history.

After crossing the Gamberi ditch, we reach the asphalt road and turn left slightly uphill. Along this stretch, we skirt the Cascina Gioiello and continue straight on, crossing the Torrazzese territory to Cascina Riccagioia. Following the path to the left at the back of the wine centre, keeping to the right on a slight slope, we reach Cascina Maresco.

Continuing along Via Maresco, passing by Cascina Roccoli with a panoramic view of the village of Torrazzetta and the Schizzola valley, we pass an allotment of villas and reach the picturesque Cascina dei Frati, together with the old farmhouse of the Conte family and the splendid Villa Veniali.

The route then takes us to Via S. Pellico, where we can admire the ancient Palazzo Dal Pozzo, the parish church and the majestic Beccaria di Montebello Castle with its statue ‘Il Cavalleggero‘. Through Via Morelli di Popolo, with the Ghislanzoni Palace on the right, and Via Rimembranza, we reach the ‘Bell‘Italia‘ ossuary monument.

We return to the Castle, passing under its walls along Via Garibaldi. At the crossroads, we turn left into Via V. Emanuele II and then right into Via Cavour, crossing the large estate of Villa Lomellini. Continuing straight on, we reach Via Savonarola and conclude our adventure at the beautiful Palazzo Bellisomi, also known as Palazzo Rosso.

Happy walking, explorers! Montebello della Battaglia awaits you with its historic residences and rural farmsteads, ready to recount centuries of history and tradition.
