Ring of Castles in Montalto Pavese: panoramic excursion through history, vineyards and nature

The Oltrepò Pavese is an authentic and still little-explored corner of Lombardy, and the Castles Ring in Montalto Pavese is the ideal hike to discover its most genuine side. A 13.9 km route, accessible in about 4 hours, that winds through vineyard-covered hills, small villages, and breathtaking views of the area’s medieval castles.

The hike begins at the parking lot of the municipal swimming pool in Mornico Losana, at 233 meters above sea level. From here, the trail gently descends through the vineyards of the so-called “Riesling Valley,” the winemaking heart of Oltrepò, until it reaches the hamlet of Losana.

After about 1.7 km, you turn left toward Oliva Gessi, passing near the Bellinzona farm. A short climb leads to the picturesque hamlet of Rosso, from which you reach the ridge between Oliva Gessi and Montalto Pavese.

At 3.4 km, turn left and enjoy a stunning view of the castles of Montalto Pavese and Mornico Losana. Continuing uphill, you pass through the hamlet of Sguernazzole and enter a charming forest at the foot of Montalto Castle, a true icon of the region.

Crossing the village uphill, you reach 385 meters in front of the Town Hall, continuing to the SP 44 road. Here, just past the Marchesi Farm, you leave the provincial road and continue straight along the ridge.

After a few meters, you reach the highest point at 403 meters: from here the view is spectacular. To the north, the Po Valley; on the horizon, the Alps and Monte Rosa; in front, the Cigognola Castle; to the southeast, Rocca de’ Giorgi. A perfect place for a photo break or a moment of quiet contemplation.

Descending slightly, you come across a plaque dedicated to partisans Luciano Villani and Antonino Rinaldi. Here, turn left onto a panoramic road also beloved by stargazers for nighttime observation. Shortly after, you pass a red brick tower owned by Maria De Filippi, a well-known Italian television personality.

At Boffalora (km 12.2), turn left to begin the descent back toward Mornico Losana. On the right, you can admire the Pietra de’ Giorgi Castle, and just before returning to the starting point, a short left detour leads back to the municipal swimming pool, where the loop closes.
