Casatisma: History, Culture and the Majesty of the Church of San Guniforte

Nestled in the plains of Oltrepò Pavese, the village of Casatisma is a small historical gem with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. Situated on the right bank of the Coppa stream, the town is home to just under 900 inhabitants and maintains a strong connection to its agricultural and religious past. One of its most significant landmarks is the Church of San Guniforte, a place of worship with great artistic and spiritual value.

The Parish Church of San Guniforte is undoubtedly the most important architectural symbol of Casatisma. Although its first official mention dates back to 1573, the current building is the result of numerous restoration and expansion works carried out over the centuries.

• 16th century: The church is mentioned for the first time in official documents, proving its existence at that time.
• 1619: It is rebuilt with a more solid and imposing architectural structure..
• 1760: Side chapels are added, giving the sacred building greater breadth.
• 19th century: The church is enriched with an artistic wooden choir loft, a testament to the craftsmanship of the era.
• 1884: The organ is installed by the renowned builder Alessandro Mentasti, further enhancing the church’s prestige.

Today, the church’s monumental façade stands out for its harmonious structure, adorned with six niches with statues, a large central rose window, and a portal decorated with a medallion featuring the effigy of San Guniforte, the town’s patron saint, who is celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of August.

The church’s interior follows a Latin cross plan, featuring a wide barrel-vaulted nave and a striking frescoed dome. Among the numerous artistic treasures housed within, some deserve special mention:

• The Chapel of Jesus, a small space for spiritual reflection.
• The painting of “Christ on the Cross”, an artwork of great artistic value.
• The historic Mentasti organ, a key element in liturgical celebrations.

Thanks to contributions from the Comunitaria Foundation of the Province of Pavia and the Cariplo Foundation, the church has recently undergone a significant restoration project coordinated by the Cultural Heritage Office of the Diocese of Tortona. This intervention has helped preserve and enhance its artistic heritage, restoring a renewed and splendid place of worship to the community.
